Wily baboon back again

The baboon, which on Tuesday frightened and amazed residents in Claremont, Wynberg and Kenilworth with its climbing abilities, was at it again in Rondebosch yesterday.

This time the wily animal had an encounter with a dog, but he came out tops. The baboon entered a house in Lister Road after the front door had been left open.

Moments later, he came out with a banana in his mouth. But he was met by the family’s barking dog. The baboon just stared at the small dog, which ran off. He then went down Malcolm Road and past the Western Cape Sportsfield before disappearing.

ADT security guards and residents tried to help capture the animal. There was only one official from the Baboon Monitors chasing him on foot.

City baboon expert Dr Elzette Jordan said the baboon was very intelligent. “We have tried cage-trapping it but because people are feeding (it) it’s not hungry, so it won’t go into the cage,” Jordan said.
