The Hantam Vleisfees (Meat festival)

Come hell or high water next year August my mates and I will be at the Hantam Vleisfees. This is something that every true blooded meat loving South African male needs to do at least once in their life.

Ok so everyone who is anyone has heard about Karoo lamb, but you have'nt tasted it until you go to the Hantam Vleisfees. Calvinia in the Northern Cape is serious sheep country and up here the locals throw a festival once a year that celebrates meat.

There is a massive array of different types of braaied meat on offer that will leave you speachles. My suggestion is to start easy with some chops and sosaties, then progess onto the stews and finish off with the tripe and trotters. If you feeling brave you can try the sheep’s head, tail and gonads. Mix in the beauty pageant, vintage car parade, a countrified version of Idols and the biggest Saturday night “sokkie” jol, and you’ll be drinking your double brandy forever.

It's usually held on the last weekend on August. It's roughly 400km's from Cape Town making it a perfect guys road trip weekend.
