Results from a survey carried out by Pondering Panda reveal that 26% of South African youth believe that fracking is some sort of sexual activity. How depressing. Clearly our education system at school level is somewhat lacking.

Almost two-thirds of young South Africans have little idea of what hydraulic fracking is about, consumer insights group Pondering Panda said yesterday.

It said this emerged in a survey conducted after the cabinet lifted a moratorium on applications to explore for shale gas in the Karoo.

“Of those who claimed they had heard of fracking, only 25 percent thought it referred to a method of extracting natural gas from under the ground,” Pondering Panda said.

“About 34 percent thought it (fracking) was a way to protect yourself from sunburn, while a further 26 percent believed it was a type of sexual activity.”

Among those familiar with the technique, which requires fracturing rock deep below the surface to extract natural gas deposits, 84 percent said they were concerned about its possible impact.

“Both the government and business need to do more to educate the public about [the pros and cons of] fracking… Pondering Panda spokeswoman Shirley Wakefield said.

Planet earth is full of resources which humans need to utilise for their own survival. We can look at these both scientifically and religiously. All these planets that are now extinct, used to be exacltly like our planet earth. Humans, as the most intelligent species in the planet, saw an opportunity and became greedy. We started extracting mineral resources from all planets without taking into consideration the future impact this will have on our planet. This merely has got to do with the fact that whilst onother generation expiriences the aftermath of damages on our planet, we would have enjoyed the benefits of fracking. Have we explored the negatives that this will have in our planet? The same goes for us extracting gold on our planet up to a point where it starts triggering earthquakes. This is way bigger than us humans, it needs devine intervention and scientific evaluation. Humans have become so selfish due to self fulfillment and glory, or is it merely a point of survival for now. What about the next generation. That is what is currently happening to certain animal species and the rest, Extinction. If we don't get greedy and control it, it could be beneficial, but we all know it could never be...
