Clarke's Diner

I came across a Tweet this morning that caught my attention. It reads "Clarke's Diner in Bree Street basically makes the best burger in the Universe! So f*cking amazing!!!!".

Since the girl in question who posted the Tweet is in my opinion one of the best Chefs around I thought I would check it out and see what all the fuss was about.

Clarke's Diner describe themselves on their website as being "a little bar & dining room in Cape Town, South Africa". Situated in 133 Bree Street in what used to be a motorcycle repair shop. In true American Diner fashion the interior is anything but conventional.

I found the following rave review on SPILL:

"Suffice to say that the meat for the burgers is from Bill Riley and the bread from Trevor Daly. That alone should tell the most fastidious of foodies that Lyndall is particular about her sources and the quality of her food.

I had two thirteen year olds with me, and we all ordered the cheeseburger and chips. “The best I’ve ever tasted!” they both declared with gusto. And the chips were good too, golden and crispy, having been par cooked first.

Apparently Riley meats makes up a special mince which delivers big time on flavour (it did). The secret is in the fat content. Clarke’s also do sandwiches (their Reuben contains brisket meat) and looks a classic. The breakfast menu has Huevos Rancheros on it as well as the “Fry-up Beast”….. hmmmm. I’ll be back as soon as I can, that burger was memorable.

Their bar will be open until 2am in the mornings. yes that’s right, 2am in the mornings."

I found another rave review on The Loop :

"Clarkes, situated on Bree Street in The Loop is a buzzing and bustling American style hamburger joint, definitely worth a visit.

The restaurant, which previously housed a motorcycle repair shop is interestingly decorated and designed. The restaurant is L-shaped with a large metal top counter at which one can sit on wooden bar stools while admiring the amazing food being prepared in a speedy sequence by the three chefs behind the counter.

The interior can be described as being quite industrial and unconventional. The interior is white and crisp with green plants in terracotta pots lining the selves. The tables are tile topped with wooden chairs with preset cutlery, bottles of Heinz ketchup, saltcellars and pepper grinders, true American diner style.

As for the food, Clarkes serves one of the juiciest and wholesome burgers made from the very best quality ingredients, transforming American style diner inspired dishes into delectable classics. As well as burgers one can choose from a variety of subs, sandwiches, salads and more."
