Bicycle Portraits

Bicycle Portraits is an exciting collaboration between Stan Engelbrecht and Nic Grobler. It showcases 165 portraits of different cyclists photographed and interviewed over a 2 year period in South Africa

Bicycle Portraits is much more than just a look at cyclists in South Africa. This is a look at a wide range of different South Africans from all walks of life and how they interact in our society through their bicycles.

South Africa is a country with a sad past and yet despite all that has happened we have a promising future. Bicycle Portraits highlights the disparities caused by our past and yet at the same time gives us a glimpse into a way forward. What started out as a study on South African commuter culture has evolved into a thought provoking insight into the people who are the heart and soul of our nation.

Bicycle Portraits will be published in 3 different books. Each one will contain 55 different stories and 2 essays by local and international cycling figures. The books have been designed by Gabrielle Guy. One of things that makes Bicycle Portraits stand apart is that with the assistance of acclaimed South African artist Gabrielle Raaff they have managed to create individual hand-painted watercolor maps, based on Google Maps, to indicate the location of each of the portraits.

Bicycle Portraits is a special work and deserves your support. The creators of Bicycle Portraits are looking to launch these 3 publications through Kickstarter. Kickstarter is the world’s largest online funding platform for creative projects.

Pre-order you copies of the Bicycle Portraits books by pledging at www.bicycleportraits.co.za/kickstarter and effectively become a co-producer of this exciting project - every pre-order puts them closer to turning this project into a beautiful 3 volume photographic publication.
