I have this thing in life which is to never trust a man with excessive facial hair. On Saturday the first British Beard and Moustache championship was held in East Sussex. One hundred contestants descended on the Dome, Brighton, East Sussex, to compete in 11 categories, from natural moustache, through ‘musketeer partial beard’, to full beard freestyle. Nearly all were in costume: there were innumerable tweeds, and at least two pith helmets. Many had responsible jobs. The man in a Victorian-style striped bathing costume, with a bushy extravaganza to match, was a psychotherapist. Richard Evans-Lacey, 38, from Bethnal Green, east London, insisted: “My clients like my beard. I like my beard. It is beautiful and bushy and the girls love it.” Keep on dreaming mate!
