Most people are familiar with a horse race, but what about a buffalo race? More than 100 water buffalo tear down a sand-covered track in Thailand piloted by jockeys hoping to scoop a cash prize. As the riders line up for the event, which has been running for 141 years, some struggle to stay atop their mounts. At the starting signal, attendants release the buffalo down the 430ft track in a cloud of dust. Water buffalo can weigh up to 1,000kg. Animals taking part in the event are entered into different categories dependant on their age. For the victorious rider, a prize of 5,000 baht (£100) is on offer, while runners-up win agricultural equipment.
