Hurricane Sandy sure has turned out to be one hell of a bitch of a storm. Sandy passed over the New Jersey coast at about 20:00 local time (midnight GMT), packing winds of about 129km/h. An estimated 50 million people have been affected, with hundreds of thousands ordered to evacuate homes. More than 2 million people have already lost power. Transport has halted in eastern cities, and thousands of flights have been grounded. A record 4-metre surge of seawater was measured in New York City, where large parts of lower Manhattan were plunged into darkness by power cuts and there were reports of some subway tunnels flooding. The storm had earlier killed dozens of people as it passed through the Caribbean, mainly in Haiti. Speaking at a news conference yesterday evening, Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned New Yorkers: "If you are in your home, or some where safe where you can remain – stay there. The time for relocation or evacuation is over." Lets hope he is right and the storm moves on today. Click HERE to find out more.
